Speakers

Carys Afoko
Activist
Co-Founder, Level Up

Dawn Foster
Journalist, The Guardian

Sridhar Venkatapuram
Senior Lecturer of Global Health and Philosophy, KCL

Topic:
Many people see themselves as allies, not themselves marginalized but nonetheless standing alongside members of marginalized groups in their struggle for social justice. The role of more powerful groups can be important, but some attempts at solidarity can also badly fail the very people they intend to help. We reflect on the significant questions and challenges involved in being an ally amidst the changing social justice movements of the twenty-first century. What does being an ally mean? When and why are allies important? And why do some attempts end in failure?

Date and Time:
13 February, 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm
Hong Kong Theatre
LSE, Clement House, 99 Aldwych, WC2B 4JF

Clare Moriarty, time travel

Time Travel

Born of science fiction, thinking about time travel has allowed us to visit possible and lost worlds, and rediscover the past through modern eyes. It also raises big puzzles: If you travelled back in time and killed your grandfather when he was a young man, would you still exist? Would changing the past mean you returned to a different present? What about travelling to the future? Two philosophers and a science fiction writer discuss time travel, and how thinking and writing about it has changed science and philosophy. (more details)

Next week: 5 December, 18:30 — 20:00

Venue: Wolfson Theatre, New Academic Building, LSE, London, WC2A 3LJ United Kingdom

Clare will chair.
