The Estella Newsome Memorial Prize

Essay Competition, pacifism

Following a generous gift from the Christian Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament from the Estate of their member Estella Newsome, we are able to offer an annual prize of £100 for an undergraduate philosophical essay on issues in ethics arising from conflict and war. No particular viewpoint need be represented in the essay, which will be judged on purely philosophical grounds.

2018 Topic: Pacifism

Winning essay prize: £100
Eligibility: The essay competition is open to any current undergraduate student at King’s College London (including final year students). Only one submission per student.
Length: up to 3,000 words (including footnotes, excluding bibliography).
Deadline: 16 July 2018.
Instructions: Please send your completed essay via email attachment to philosophy@kcl.ac.uk. Word document or pdf. Email subject line: ‘The Estella Newsome Memorial Prize’.
Panel: The essays will be assessed by a panel of 3 philosophers.

Major research grants for the Philosophy Department

Three of our staff have recently received major research grants:

  • Ellen Fridland: Templeton grant for work on a conception of intelligent automaticity from the perspective of skill and applying this to moral expertise, especially intelligent affective change as connected with moral behaviour. Part of their Diverse Intelligences programme.
  • Andrea Sangiovanni: 5-year European Research Council Consolidator Grant on ‘Solidarity in the European Union’, aiming to develop a theory of justice for the EU.
  • Mark Textor: Leverhulme Research Fellowship for work on ‘Austrian Philosophy 1874-1918: Empiricism, Evidence and Economy’

Sacha Golob, Vanessa Brassey and Emma Syea will be leading a series of art/philosophy discussions at Tate Britain over the summer in response to their hugely popular All Too Human show (Bacon, Freud, Rego, Souza and others).

The first event features Amalia Ulman, described by the Telegraph as having created the first ever ‘Instagram masterpiece’, the philosopher Timothy Secret and the Bacon specialist Katharina Guenther:

The Philosophy Department at King’s College London is seeking an excellent philosopher with research expertise and teaching experience in political philosophy. Competence and ability to teach at all UG and PGT levels in political philosophy are required; the ability to offer some teaching in the philosophy of race and/or gender would be an advantage. Research specialization in political philosophy is required.

This Full Time post will be fixed term for 24 months.

The deadline for applications is midnight on Wednesday, 11 April 2018.

Graduate Teaching Assistant

Applications are now open for 2018-19 Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) positions across the Faculty of Arts & Humanities. If you are a graduate student in philosophy at a UK higher education institution (whether it is King’s or not), you can apply to contribute to the teaching at King’s. Instructions and forms below. The deadline is March 5th, 2018.

FOR EXTERNAL APPLICANTS WHO ARE CURRENTLY ENROLLED AS POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH STUDENTS IN OTHER UNIVERSITIES, NOT KING’S COLLEGE LONDON

  • Please complete the attached GTA application form (remember to quote both module codes and titles in your application form; these can be found in the attached list of modules available)
  • Please send the completed documents listed below to your primary supervisor via email (if you are a GTA not enrolled in King’s College London, you can ask a module convenor for to complete the academic reference form, as long as the module convenor has observed your class).

Sarah Fine invites everyone to the Active Maps dance workshops:

Thu 22 February 2018
15:00 – 17:00 GMT
Tutu’s, Level 4 Macadam Building. Strand Campus

Dr Fine collaborated on this performance workshop which allows the participants to create their own personal map. Lead by choreographer Sivan Rubinstein and live music composer Liran Donin the journey starts with a visual installation designed by Hamish McPherson where we look at the world as one home, and then through movement, sound and migration we create our very own global map which looks at the constantly changing nature of the world.
